NBA 2K21 on the PS5 and Xbox Series X Will Cost $70

Video game developer Take-Two Interactive recently announced that NBA 2K21 for the Sony PlayStation 5 and Microsoft Xbox Series X will come with a suggested retail price of $69.99 USD. The pre-order release information reveals a $10 USD price jump from the standard $59.99 USD for most AAA games.

The price increase isn’t out of the blue: as games become more and more complex and detailed, it becomes more and more expensive for developers to create a single title. And we’ve already started to see prices creep upward in the current generation with more expensive “deluxe” or “gold” editions of titles that include extra bonus content, cosmetics, or DLC. But for players about to shell out hundreds of dollars on a new console, it’s not exactly exciting to see that all the new games coming out might be even more expensive, too.

Gaming is quickly becoming a prohibitively expensive hobby. A $10 increase might not sound like much, but with the overwhelming cost of new consoles themselves and the price of online subscriptions for multiplayer capabilities, working-class families might already be priced out of the fun. And, with record unemployment numbers due to the coronavirus, less people than ever might have the money to afford a new console or a $70 dollar game anyway. NBA 2K21 has multiple versions, including one that crosses the two console generations. The Kobe Bryant-fronted Mamba Forever Edition is available across all platforms for $99.99/£84.99, and will feature a host of extra digital content. In addition, anyone who purchases this version can get the standard version of the game on the other generation at no extra cost (within the same console family) — so if you buy the PS4 Mama Forever Edition of the game, you can get the standard version on PS5 as part of the package.

2K Games also confirmed that NBA 2K21 is coming to Xbox One, PS4, PC, Nintendo Switch and Stadia. It’s currently aiming to release on September 4, 2020. The Xbox Series X and PS5 versions of the game will be available sometime in Holiday 2020.
