As the sullygnome data reveals, Soulja Boy’s RuneScape streams have proven wildly popular in the last week. Other popular games (such as GTA 5 and also the newly-released Hyper Scape) just couldn’t compare to the sheer amount of people tuning in to see him play an old browser game. I believe it’s safe to say that this viral rapper and entrepreneur has found himself an audience at the strangest of places. It looks like he will continue to be a variety streamer, though his best chance for staying in the spotlight could just be this beloved browser game classic.
When I was a kid I wasn’t allowed to play with video games. My parents forbid consoles in our residence, supposing video games were violent and boyish distractions from my social and academic life, and as a direct result of the prohibition I climbed up consumed with the desire to play video games at any price. I exchanged lunchbox snacks in recess for twenty minutes with my classmates’ Gameboys. None of that was enough. That is when I discovered Runescape.
There were quests to complete, dragons to fight, medieval cities to research, and the societal component of being able to play and communicate with other gamers logged into RuneScape.
